Unarmed Security Officer

Bay Area and Southern California sites · Full-time and part-time
$28.00 per hour

About the role

You'll be the first person visitors see at places like hospitals, hotels and office buildings. Most of the job is paying attention, helping people and writing down what you saw. When something does go wrong, you'll stay calm, handle what you can and call for backup when you need it.

What you'll do

  • Conduct foot and checkpoint patrols following site post orders
  • Monitor entrances, verify credentials and manage visitor access
  • Observe and report safety hazards, suspicious activity and policy violations
  • Respond calmly to incidents, using de-escalation and communication first
  • Write clear, accurate daily activity and incident reports using our mobile app
  • Provide courteous customer service to clients, staff and the public
  • Coordinate with supervisors, client staff and emergency services when needed

Requirements

  • Current BSIS Security Guard Registration (guard card), or eligibility to obtain one before starting work
  • At least 18 years old
  • Completion of state-required training: Powers to Arrest before registration and the full 40 hours within the first six months
  • Strong written and spoken English; Spanish, French or Swahili a plus
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and work outdoors in varied weather
  • Reliable availability for assigned shifts, which may include nights, weekends and holidays

Preferred

  • Prior security, military, hospitality or customer service experience
  • Healthcare or hospitality security experience
  • CPR, First Aid or AED certification

Pay and benefits

Armed Security Officer

Assigned client sites statewide · Full-time
$40.00 per hour

About the role

We only place armed officers where we've found a real need. You'll carry more responsibility than anyone else on site, so we look for people with steady judgment who see the firearm as a last resort, not an answer to every problem.

  • Maintain constant control and safe handling of your firearm while on duty
  • Follow Shepherd's written use-of-force policy and site post orders without exception
  • Respond to alarms and incidents and coordinate with law enforcement
  • Document every incident thoroughly and accurately, including any use of force

Requirements

  • Current BSIS Security Guard Registration
  • Current BSIS Firearms Permit for the caliber you will carry, which requires being at least 21 years old, completing BSIS firearms training and passing the state's required assessment
  • Ongoing firearms requalification as required by BSIS
  • Valid California driver's license if the assignment includes driving
  • Sound judgment, composure and excellent report-writing skills

Preferred

  • Two or more years of armed security, military or law enforcement experience
  • Baton permit, CPR and First Aid certification

Field Supervisor

San Francisco and the East Bay · Full-time
$32.00 per hour

About the role

Field Supervisors are the people our officers call when they need help, and the people our clients call when they want answers. • Train new officers at their sites and help them write clear, accurate reports
  • Respond to escalated incidents and support officers on the scene
  • Cover open shifts or arrange coverage so no post is left empty

  • Be a reliable point of contact for client managers at your sites

Requirements

  • Current BSIS Security Guard Registration
  • At least two years of security experience, including time in a lead or supervisory role
